It had been a while since I last picked up the axe; my technique was clumsy at first but once you channel those years of teenage angst it all slowly comes back. I slowly recalled my favourite things to play on guitar: Cherub Rock and 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins; Sultans of Swing and Down to the Waterline by Dire Straits; Wish You Were Here and Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd; Classical Gas by Mason Williams. However, there was a song in the back of my mind the whole time, which I didn’t figure out until I fired up my PC. It wasn’t Zeppelin, or Chili Peppers, or Hendrix; it was Mega Man.
Although what I was thinking at the time I was holding my guitar was more like this:
It’s a reminder that a lot of great music is released for that purpose, to exist as music in that medium. However, a lot of awesome music was originally meant as a theme to a visual medium, whether they be video games or movies. The theme to Pacific Rim as well as The Lord of the Rings still give me chills. I think the Return of the King soundtrack is one of the best movie soundtracks, since I can basically picture in which scene each song takes place. However, I don’t think anything quite matches my fascination as the Final Fantasy VI soundtrack (which was actually released as Final Fantasy III in North America, but that doesn’t matter).
Even more that most music that I love, soundtracks evoke incredibly strong and vivid emotions. Maybe it’s the mix of nostalgia as well, since I recognized video game music well before I started loving music on its own; for perspective, I started playing video games at around 7-8 years old when my parents got me the SNES but I didn’t really develop my own taste for music until years afterwards. By then, I was more than acquainted with Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, and Final Fantasy IV. When I first played Final Fantasy VI it was fucking incredible . Although the arrangement this orchestra plays isn’t ideal, it still touches on so many of the main themes that contributed to my love of this game.
My love of cars came from video games, too; Need for Speed games (Hot Pursuit and High Stakes, from the nineties) were the big ones and then NFS: Most Wanted from around 2005.
In any case, I forgot why I created this post in the first place. I think I just wanted to share some cool video game music.
